Are you comparing apples with apples?

Are you comparing apples with apples?

Sometimes we hear statements from potential clients like, "We've got a cheaper quote elsewhere" or simply "That's more than I expected!".

We want to share some information and pointers on what to look for when comparing cleaning quotations between companies to ensure you're selecting a provider based on comparative offerings. More often than not, there is a significant misunderstanding and poorly reasoned preconceptions about quality cleaning companies and pricing.

Differences in pricing between quotations can easily be accounted for if you know what to compare (and ask a potential service provider). Don't be fooled into blindly accepting the lowest price.

Here are a few factors your company should take into account:

Keeping your office kitchen under control!

Keeping your office kitchen under control!

In many workplaces it's not unusual for the bathroom to be cleaner than the kitchen. Your commercial cleaner may only clean the premises once or twice per week meaning the office staff are then responsible for the day to day upkeep of the kitchen!

Dirty coffee mugs, unfinished cereal bowls, leftovers stuck in the drain, microwave ovens resembling a miniature explosion with the fossils of bygone lunches stubbornly clinging to the walls - sound familiar?. These are a few of the least-favourite things that characterise staff kitchens, many of which would fail the food safety audits that restaurants are subjected to each year.

Signs with LARGE capital letters, bold fonts, underlined words and endless exclamation marks are just some of the tactics employed by kitchen clean freaks to try and make employees wash up. But do they work????

Is your office ready for its annual maintenance clean?

Is your office ready for its annual maintenance clean?

With Christmas just around the corner, now is a great time to plan your annual commercial cleaning maintenance schedule and get your office ready for 2015!

So what should you look for? Below are a few things to look out for in your office (outside the normal cleaning schedule)

Carpets

Even if a carpet looks clean to the eye - what lies beneath can be a very different story. Wherever debris can collect, vacuuming regularly is just not enough to ensure a clean and hygienic carpet.

The best vacuum cleaners remove only part of the deep down dirt that can include food debris, drink spills, flakes of dead skin cells, dust mite droppings and allergens like pollen. Even if your carpet looks clean, the settling of dust between the carpet fibres forms an abrasive layer that can shorten the life of your carpet with every step that is taken over it.

Commercial carpet cleaning should be performed every 6-12 months depending on staff numbers.

How clean is your gym?

How clean is your gym?

Maintaining a hygienic and clean gym should be the priority of gym owners for keeping their customers. A lack of cleanliness and hygiene may lead to the loss of customers and if left unattended for a long time, the problem may translate into declining memberships and the difference between profit and loss.

The difference between gym cleaning and any other commercial office lies in the degree of bacteria and pathogens that breed over the various surfaces. Gym is a place where people work out and sweat hard to remain fit but this fitness cannot be achieved if the equipment you use remains a hot spot for infection.

Below are a few ways you can increase the cleanliness of your gym to create a better environment for your members:

Technology Solutions Within The Cleaning Industry

Technology Solutions Within The Cleaning Industry

Without a doubt, declining quality in a company's regular office cleaning schedule is the number one reason some office contracts seem to incur a high turnover rate. Small service teams are relatively easy to manage (for cleaning companies) but catering to hundreds of client sites is more challenging.

Therein lies the problem! You might sign up with a company that only has a few clients and experience that "personal touch" for a little while. But as they grow, you hear less and less from your account manager and the quality of your cleaning heads south...Why?

Because these companies aren't set up to manage the increased growth and therefore struggle to keep up with client requirements. If they simply have too many contracts, too many staff to maintain yet no way of interacting between the two, the end result is cleaners that don't show up, jobs that are not completed to standard or perhaps even on-site injury!

Is Your Commercial Cleaner Using Hygienic Equipment?

Is Your Commercial Cleaner Using Hygienic Equipment?

They say that any tradie is only as good as his tools and cleaners are no exception. As in all trades, there's "cheap and nasty" and there's professional quality.

Five Star Cleaners supplies and maintains only high quality tools from the basics like microfibre cloths to its state of the art carpet cleaning equipment. But that isn't the end of the road. Constant maintenance and/or replacement is a necessity in the cleaning industry due to the frequent usage of all equipment and a necessity to ensure continous hygiene in a commercial cleaning environment.

After all, dirty mops and mop buckets transporting bacteria and dirt from one job to another are obviously not ideal. Have you asked your office cleaners to view their equipment? Is it clean? Have their cloths and rags been washed?

Below are some examples of the practices we utilise in our day to day servicing of offices throughout Brisbane:

Window Cleaning Tips For The Home Or Office

Window Cleaning Tips For The Home Or Office

Wash your windows the fast and professional way with crystal clear, streak-free results! We're going to tell you how you can wash windows with a squeegee and we guarantee that you'll never go back to a spray bottle and paper towels.

There are obviously some tools you will require but these can be inexpensive and last a lifetime. If you want to tackle your own windows, you will need; a high quality squeegee, a washer, a bucket, dishwashing liquid, a microfibre cloth and a towel. You can pick these up all for around $60 at any cleaning supplies store.

The key to success in window cleaning is buying a good squeegee and keeping it fitted with a sharp, new rubber blade. If the edge of the blade gets sliced or rounded over from use, replace it immediately or you'll be left with streaks and left over water.

Now let's get into it:

Step 1: Dip the washer in a solution of 1 teaspoon dishwashing liquid to approximately 8-10 litres of cool water. Squeeze any excess water from the washer

What Do You Really Know About Your Office Cleaners?

What Do You Really Know About Your Office Cleaners?

Whether your business is a husband and wife partnership or a multi-national conglomerate, your premises holds not only valuable plant, furniture & equipment but sensitive financial & personal data.

One of the few people to access your property when you are not there, is your office cleaner. Can you really trust them? What information do you have on them? Are they trustworthy?

Many companies operate uninsured and hire the first cleaner they meet with. No background checks, no details...they just need to get out of a bind. They need someone, anyone. This is a dangerous and regular occurance within the industry and quite frankly, it's alarming!

Businesses sign up to new cleaning companies day in, day out, hand over keys & alarm codes and never think twice about who they're actually employing or bother to ask who will be entering their premises.

No Obligations Trial Periods

No Obligations Trial Periods

You're looking around for a new office cleaner within Brisbane and you spot one that offers a "No Obligations Trial Period" for your business. Great!

But is it really? What does "no obligations" mean anyway?

Generally, these companies are offering you 7, 14 or even 28 days of their services without the requirement to sign on for a contract period of 12 months or more. Good idea. Except the reality of it is, almost any cleaning business can maintain a high standard for 7, 14 or 28 days. But what about after that? What happens after you've put pen to paper and committed for 12-24 months or even longer. That's a long time to hope and pray that standards stay the same!

Think about it...you've probably been in the same situation and been caught about before.

The "Tidy Desk" Policy

The "Tidy Desk" Policy

Every company is different in the policies it implements and enforces on employees. One such policy is the "Tidy Desk" or "Clear Desk" policy.

Simply put, this means all employees are to clear their desks at the end of each work day. Some companies may even extend this to include computer screens ("Clear Screen" policy).

Whilst implementing either of these policies won't be at the direction of a cleaning company, they do immensely help office cleaners complete their duties in a better and more timely manner. Without a jungle of papers, business cards, pens, staplers and coffee mugs to wade through, an office cleaner can access and sanitise all areas of your office desk and ensure it remains a bacteria free zone.

Ask your current office cleaner what their policy is in regards to the cleaning of your office desks. Do they pick up and move objects, paperwork or your valuables in order to clean? Or do they leave the desk as is?

How To Get Rid Of Smelly Drains

How To Get Rid Of Smelly Drains

Smelly drains are a common problem, especially after holidays or extended periods of non-use. In some instances, the odour will cease to emit once water begins running through the pipes again. This is simply because the pipes and traps have dried out over the period in which they have not been used.

Built up gunk over years and failure to clean out pipes however is usually what causes smelly drains in both kitchens and bathrooms. This is a common problem we find throughout many commercial establishments but before calling the plumber in, try some of these simple tips:

  • Plug the drain and sprinkle two tablespoons of bi-carb soda over the closed drain and then pour approximately one cup of white vinegar in. When the mixture begins to foam, take out the plug and leave for a few minutes. Pour approximately two to three cups of extremely hot water down the sink and check results. Follow up with a diluted mixture of chlorine bleach and water (2-3 cups) to further eliminate any remaining bacteria that remain
  • * Do not use/mix the vinegar and bleach together. This is two separate processes! Also do not use the bleach if you are on a septic system.
  • If you are not adverse to using chemicals, utilise a standard cleaner like "Draino" but follow all product instructions carefully
  • If you can remove the floor drain grate, tip a bucket of water down to flush out the larger pipe. Sometimes, the small pipe from the sink won't have enough force behind it to flush all the waste down to the next trap, therefore anything that may remain in the large pipe will eventually smell
  • Replace soap bars with liquid soap. No flakes to get stuck and therefore no build up.
  • If you want to go to extremes before calling in the plumber (not recommended), pull apart your pipes underneath the sink and manually clean out the gunk that you find. Most bathroom pipes will have hair, toothpaste, whiskers etc within them whilst kitchen pipes will no doubt hold on to bits of food particles and debris.
